Cambio demográfico: la actividad física como factor de protección para un envejecimiento saludable

Resumen

La población del mundo desarrollado y en vías de desarrollo enfrenta un creciente envejecimiento, nuestras sociedades deben avanzar en la atención de la salud de los adultos mayores. Una de las variables que favorecen la calidad de vida en la adultez mayor es el ejercicio físico continuo, este no sólo mejora aspectos de la salud física, sino también de la salud cognitiva, ayudando a procesos como las capacidades mnemónicas espaciales, episódicas, de trabajo y de atención viso espacial. El ejercicio también reduce el riesgo de trastornos emocionales y de enfermedades crónicas. Variables demográficas como el nivel educativo, el género o la zona geográfica de procedencia se relacionan también con el desempeño de la actividad física en la adultez. Conocer los factores que promueven la actividad física, así como el desarrollo de investigación aplicada sobre dicho tema es de la mayor importancia para la salud pública.
